The windmill is one of the most cold hardy trunked palms. It grows well in most areas of Zone 7 as well as Zone 8 (we are zone 8a). They do very well in light shade and prefer a rich, moist, but well drained soil. Large well established windmills in this area and even further north, have recovered from sub-zero freezes. Windmills usually start to show cold damage at around 5 degrees, depending on duration. Height can reach 10 to 20 feet, with a frond spread of 6 to 10 feet. Protection from harsh winds will minimize leaf tearing, but windmills can be used in some instances closer to the water. They are very tolerant of salt and wind. These are commonly used in this area in landscaping. They make nice plants for around sitting areas, pools, and patio’s. They look good planted as a focal point, or lining a roadside or driveway entry. This palm is relatively slow growing.
